Dog’s (and Cats) and Hardwood Flooring
We love our pets, but we also love our floor. With the investment that goes into your flooring you don’t necessarily want it all scratched up. I have had the joy of doggysitting my friends beautiful staffordshire terrier. In my home I have rustic prefinished maple flooring with a medium brown stain. I also have EuroCork in my kitchen. On the hardness scale, maple is one of the hardest North American domestic species. I have also been bringing the pup to work with me, which has hardwood and cork throughout the showroom. She is a medium sized dog and fairly calm. My floors do not have any obvious scratches… BUT I am not about to tell you that dogs won’t scratch hardwood floors. All hardwood and cork floors have different finishes which will effect the overall durabiliity. Different species will also have different hardness levels which effect it denting when in contact with a blunt object. Hardwood flooring and scratches overtime are one of those facts of life… especially if you have pets. (when my floor was first installed and still looking like a piano top I made my sister put little booties on her 1 year old large mix-breed!!!)…BUT then I realized that was slightly ridiculous and a hardwood floor is still just a floor and not a piano top. Overtime, I have accepted minor scratching and denting in my 2 year-old floor. I actually consider it adding character to my home. Hopefully people who are looking for real Hardwood and Cork Flooring will take this into account.
